About
I am a licensed clinical social worker offering psychoanalytic treatment in Ithaca, New York. My work is informed by many years of experience with a wide range of people, experiences, and backgrounds.
My practice tends to suit people who want something deeper than symptom relief, and have some interest in their own unconscious. Some issues I have worked with in the past are, but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, dissociation, psychotic disorders, relationship difficulties, and sexual problems (impotence, fetishism, etc), as well as those who merely want to pursue psychoanalysis.
My approach is broadly Lacanian, while first and foremost psychoanalytic.
I teach at the International Institute for Psychoanalysis, and am actively working on research in topology and the history of psychoanalysis. I additionally co-edit the website Fibration.
Treatment and supervision
Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis is a long-form process of discovery, with no guarantees and no set formula. Each analysis is singular, as it works to grasp how each particular situation has come to formation.
Sessions are often held several times a week, which gives the work continuity and momentum.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy uses the same method at a lighter frequency, usually one session a week.
It suits people who want depth without the commitment of a full analysis, and can also be a good way to find out whether analysis is right for you.
Supervision
I supervise clinicians and therapists who want a better understanding of transference, counter-transference, and structural interpretations in the therapeutic or analytic situation.
What is psychoanalysis?
What sets psychoanalysis apart from other treatments is its ability to work with the entirety of an individual’s life, and not merely with the symptom itself. So we work with fears, anxieties, fantasies, dreams, jealousies, and the whole of one’s history. This allows, practically speaking, for association to replace the dissociation that modern life has accustomed us to. By making connections where they had been severed, or at least severely limited, we can come into contact with elements of ourselves that have been “scotomized” or made into a “blind spot”.
We can also think of psychoanalysis as the name we give to a very specific process of recovery, i.e. the one by which we come to know something that we have always known, but which has evaded our conscious grasp. These “unconscious” elements persist in our lives, in our speech, beyond our everyday awareness, yet they are often the immediate causes of our suffering. As such, they lead us to repeat patterns and relationships that are harmful, painful, and often antithetical to what we want out of life.
Analysis is thus a dual process of discovery and recovery. Just like archaeology, the more we uncover, the more our understanding of our own history changes. Our narratives and notions shift as the lens through which we view ourselves changes. It is this type of intervention that offers us a choice, a possibility, where we previously did not have one.
Such a process entails working with another (an analyst) who listens to the way these elements function in one’s speech and language. Put differently: we will be “working with your unconscious”. This type of work is best done regularly, in person, and several times a week, because frequency lets the work develop despite our defences. Once-weekly and online sessions are also available.

“Psychoanalysis simplifies life. It sorts the maze of stray impulses and tries to wind them around the spool to which they belong. Or, to change the metaphor, it supplies the thread that leads one out of the labyrinth of their own unconscious” –S. Freud
